Cal State University Los Angeles: Graduation Session: Karina

May 10, 2026

Karina was a SPED student. She processed information more slowly. Students with slow processing speeds need more time to receive, understand, and respond to information, which can affect academic performance and does not reflect intelligence. Yet, at an IEP meeting during her 8th-grade year, Karina was told that she would never graduate from high school, attend college, or live on her own. She proved them wrong. She graduated from high school with honors, attended Mt. SAC, and transferred to Cal State University, Los Angeles. All through it, she worked at Starbucks, bought her own car and even lived on her by 21.

“I would tell Special Ed Students that, ‘Never give up. Yes, you learn differently, but that doesn’t mean you are not smart. Never let someone tell you that you can’t do this, or go to school, or get a job, because of your disability. It is not true. No matter where you come from, or what you have, it doesn’t define you. You are your own person. Own it.”

UCR Graduation Photography: Hannah

Hannah is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a minor in Feminist Studies. This first-generation college student is graduating with the highest honors….Summa Cum Laude! She has been surrounded by people who support her. But it’s her mom, who has been there for her since kindergarten. Her mother is the reason Hannah is so passionate about pursuing a career where she can be a source of support and stability for others. Hannah will be pursuing a Master’s Degree.

California Botanic Garden Claremont Photography/ Rylie and Family

Rylie has graduated high school! She is a leader who founded a MESI by partnering up with her school’s counselors and staff to provide a safe environment and connection for the students to hold conversations and activities with the goal of strengthening their self-love and independence. It also gave them the resources and a safe space for them to share what they were enduring. Rylie chose the path of clinical psychology after she experienced her friend’s mental health suffering during the pandemic. With this being the core for heart, she decided to pursue a career in clinical psychiatry. She will be acquiring her undergraduate at UCR and her Masters program at UCSD.

Rylie did her graduation session with those she loves the most… her family.
