It was an amazing celebration of an incredible person. Genevieve Magaña has accomplished so much and is an example of resilience and strength. Experts from the speech made by Richard Morales.
We are here tonight for something truly special — to celebrate forty incredible years of the one and only Genevieve Magaña. A woman with a huge spirit, a bigger heart, and the kind of determination that could power a small city…or at least a room full of family members who definitely cannot keep up with her.
But before we celebrate the woman she is today, we have to go back.
Because to understand Gen, you have to understand where she came from, who shaped her, and how she became this absolute force of nature we all love so much. From the very beginning, Gen seemed to have one mission: Have fun — and make sure everyone around her was laughing too. She was always giggling, always joking, always pulling pranks…
Mischievous, clever, joyful — that was Gen. She wasn’t just outgoing — she announced herself to every room she entered.Gen made friends easily because of her wit, her humor, and her warmth.
After high school, Gen went to Rio Hondo College to study photography — and she fell in love with the art form. Beautiful photos…Beautiful moments…Beautiful beginnings.
Then Gen transferred to the New York Film Academy. And this is where her independence took center stage. She didn’t ask her parents for anything — not money, not help — she figured life out, balanced school, balanced her responsibilities, and handled adulthood like a champ.
Gen dove into every role she could: director, editor, gaffer, writer, producer…
She wanted to learn everything — and she did. Because when Gen had a dream, she didn’t wait for it.
She made it happen.
After graduating, she landed a job as an editor at The Hollywood Reporter — and she was phenomenal. While she was there, the universe handed her something magical: She met Johnny Depp.
Her forever celebrity crush. Teenage Gen would’ve fainted. Adult Gen… might’ve still fainted — but with professionalism.
Then came July 31, 2007. An accident…A three-week coma….Doctors said her chances were small.
But those doctors didn’t know who they were dealing with.
This was Gen — the fighter, the trickster, the force of nature who never took “no” for an answer. And she fought her way back. Her strength… her will… her courage… It wasn’t just physical. It was spiritual. It was miraculous.
The accident affected her speech, memory, and comprehension — but you would NEVER know that from how she lives her life.
The accident awakened a whole new creative side — through painting, through art, through color.
It became her therapy, her joy, and her way of expressing that fire inside her.
Gen wakes up ready to enjoy life.
She laughs.
She paints for hours.
She goes to scary movies — the scarier the better.
She LOVES shoes — especially Vans. She has about twenty pairs and counting.
There’s a reason this room is full tonight.
Gen makes every outing, every moment, every gathering more fun — more alive — more memorable.
She inspires us.
She challenges us to find strength inside ourselves.
She makes us laugh.
She makes us grateful — for her life, her example, and her love.
Where others see challenges, Gen sees opportunities.
No limits. No fear. Nothing and no one can keep her down.
And from my heart — Gen, you are a role model to me, and to so many.
Thank you for showing us what it means to live fully, love fully, and give fully.
