Grace E. Simmons Lodge Event Photography: Ali and Dan

Where does a love story begin for a couple is celebrating 40 years of marriage? For Ali and Dan, it began at Franklin High School in Los Angeles. He was a football player and she was on Drill Team. It was her birthday and Dan took the opportunity to ask Ali out. Their first date would be at the Santa Monica Pier. Dan knew he had the woman he wanted to marry and so he proposed…three times! Ali finally said yes. On July 2nd, 1983 at St. Ignatious of Loyola Catholic Church, Ali and Dan promised before God, family and friends to love each other forever.

They returned to the church. This time with their children as their wedding party. They commemorated their adventures together in a family celebration that showed everyone the power of love!

Casa Colina Hospital/ Love Story/ Abacuc and Erica

They say Love is blind, but sometimes love is so clear. It’s just not seen with eyes, but felt in your heart.

When I saw Erica pushing Abacuc’s wheelchair into the dialysis center, I assumed she was his nurse or caretaker. Then I saw her kiss him on the forehead and my imagination began running with their love story. She was probably young when she married him and he was older, now he was sick and she was still devoted to him. I had it wrong. I, of course love hearing how two people met and so I asked. My imaginative version was far from the truth.

Abacuc and Erica met at Casa Colina Hospital five years ago where they were both in rehabilitation learning to live with their disabilities. They would both go sit next to the fountain in the courtyard and just reflect quietly to themselves. One day, Abacuc heard Erica crying and so he simply said, “Don’t cry.” And so the love story began. Abacuc is loving, intelligent and funny. Even though Abacuc could not see her clearly, he knew Erica was beautiful, and kind with a big heart.

They were married in the very place they met. In Casa Colina Hospital in the courtyard. Sadly, their wedding photographer never gave them their wedding pictures. I was blessed to capture their 3rd year anniversary pictures.

      Anniversary Photography: Roberto and Kathy

Fifteen years ago, on March 25th, 2006, Roberto and Kathy promised to love each other forever. There were only two of them. The rings they exchanged, now show scratches, which means they have faithfully been worn. Love grows and now Roberto and Kathy are the parents of Roberto Jr., Christopher and Jonathan.

Kathy describes Roberto as the perfect father, hardworking, passionate, and her soul mate. Roberto describes Kathy as a loving mother, a dedicated wife, and his princess. With each day, Roberto has been able to show his love for her and their children.

During their session Roberto whispered to Kathy that marrying her was the best decision of his life. Kathy hopes to be worthy of him and wishes to make him as happy as she has been all these years.

      1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.

30 Year Anniversary: Guillermo loves Teresita

Guillermo was a 21 year old college student and Teresita, the girl who caught his attention everyday, was 14. (Stop. Wait. It’s a beautiful story. I promise. Keep reading.) Guillermo had rented a room in Teresita’s home. So he did the only thing that a nice young man could do. He asked Teresita’s parents permission to ask her out. They said, “Yes.” But when Guillermo asked Teresita, her response went along the lines of, “I guess so.”
Their dates, if you could call them that, were more like play dates that were highly supervised. Their first kiss would not be until months later because Teresita loved him as friend. In fact, Teresita would take him to teacher conferences saying that he was her brother. One teacher fell for his charms and changed her F to a B-. They grew up listening to the Beatles and taking Karate Classes together and they broke up a lot. Of course Teresita fell in love with him. He was noble, forgiving and an excellent son. If to others he portrayed himself as tough, with her, he showed his emotions. Now she was 21 and he was almost 28.
Guillermo graduated and was offered a job as manager for a chain of stores. They were broken up. But Guillermo knew that Teresita had always been the one. So before leaving to Mexico City for his job training, he knocked on her door and asked her to marry him. Teresita said, “Come back tomorrow. I’ll think about it.” Guillermo did and Teresita said, “Yes,” because of course she loved him. She was ready to marry him.
But Teresita’s father was not ready to hand over his daughter so fast. He told them that they would have to wait nine months before getting married. That way if there was a reason they had to get married, everyone would know. Guillermo told him, “We can wait a year.” They didn’t. Guillermo went for training for 6 months and three months later they were married. And 5 years after that, they were blessed with a little girl, Paulina. And then Juana Maria and then Nora. Guillermo and Teresita have been married for 30 years.
