The white blanket was held down with four rose arrangements. Petals were a walkway to it. J finished putting up 15 signs that marked milestones in their relationship. The first was when they met, and others included the first kiss and getting a key, but the last one said, “Will you marry me?” J had worked so hard to surprise L. With help from both their families and her best friend, they came up with a perfect ruse. L believed they were celebrating her parents’ anniversary and taking family pictures before dinner at a park.
I played the photographer who wasn’t sure where to shoot them. So when L and her family arrived, I met them in the parking lot and said I needed someone to make sure the spot would work. Everyone volunteered L to go with me. We walked and suddenly J stepped out. L smiled when she saw him and even joked, “This is a great practice for when you propose.” J smiled and said, “This isn’t a practice. It’s real.” He then walked her and they stopped at every sign, remembering all the happy moments they had shared.
He stopped at the last sign and then took L to the perfect spot he had chosen to ask her to marry him. There was a lake behind them, and a tree was beside them. J fell to one knee and asked L to say yes to being his wife. L, of course, said yes, and strangers in the park watching started clapping. Suddenly, they were surrounded by family celebrating a new milestone. J and L were engaged.
