Children at Weddings

A child at a wedding means that child is loved. They have a special tie to the bride and groom. Sometimes they are their younger brothers and sisters, their nieces and nephews, the children of their friends or even children they once babysat. Sometimes, they are even their own children. I always look forward to photographing kids at weddings because I never know what they are going to do… No one does.
Some will follow instructions and take their responsibility so seriously that the childish one is me. Other run, giggle, and laugh… right in the middle of the ceremony, and it’s adorable. Girls will twirl in their dresses and boys will fidget with their ties.

I have seen children stare at awe at a wedding dress. I have seen them sit down in the middle of the aisle, refusing to take another step and others that run to the arms of the groom. I have seen kids be the first one on a dance floor and others that slept under tables the whole time.

If you are going to have young children at your wedding, remember the following:

1. Explain to kids what they are doing by showing them pictures,  videos…practice by playing.

2. Remember they will be nervous. That aisle is long. A lot of people are watching. Let them hold on to someone and it’s okay if they sit during the ceremony or  do not walk in during grand entrance.

3. Give them something kid like to do… yes throw flowers, but also hold balloons…let go of balloons, blow bubbles, play with ribbon wands etc… And um… the real wedding rings might not be safe on a pillow in a little boy’s hands.

4. Remember children do not have be in every group photo. Candids of them being kids will be the best memories ever.

5. Enjoy their antics, their laughter….their presence. They are kids. Kids that were special enough to be in a wedding.
